    We’ve been structuring the check-ins a bit in the K-1 class lately. Usually we ask them to say their own name and name something related to to the topic. This week was, state your name and your favorite animal. One challenge is that if the check-in is too long then the kids get too antsy to sit for anything else. Maybe we need to have a more active activity right after check-in?

    Hi Heather,
    It makes sense that for the younger kids, check-ins may need to be shorter and more directed. But I think the point of check-ins is to practice sharing a little bit of our lives.

    I wonder if something like, “Please share anything happy or sad that happened this week. If nothing comes to mind, you can say ‘pass’ ” might work with the K-1 Class. – jc

    Heather @ 1 — You write: “This week was, state your name and your favorite animal.”

    That’s a great idea! Perfect for this age group, especially when you have a big group (seems to me you folks had 14 children a week ago). It’s a good way for the kids to get to know a little bit about each other, and to have just a little time where they are appreciated for who they are.

    This past Sunday, because it was school vacation week, we had low attendance, and I had all the K-1 kids along with all the gr. 2-3 kids — 12 children in all. I did go around the circle and ask them to say one good thing and one bad thing that had happened to them in the past week. The older children were more likely to respond, but some of the K-1 kids responded. It did take a long time — about ten minutes total. It was worth it for me, because later on when I led a discussion about the story I told, all the children were much more willing to participate. Even the shy kids got really interested in the discussion. So if you’re looking to increase participation by all children, investing some time up front in a warm and welcoming check-in can really be worth it.
