Podcast #2: Goal of Religious Literacy

In this week’s podcast, Reverend Dan Harper and I discuss the goal of teaching religious literacy in the context of the children’s religious education program at UUCPA.

What do you think about the goal of fostering religious literacy? Which would you want our UU kids to know about religion and UUism? We’d love to hear your thoughts to these questions, and reactions to the podcast. Please post a comment to this blog entry.

Podcast #1: CRE Goals

We’re launching a new feature in this blog: podcasts! The plan is to have 2-4 new podcasts per month that discuss religious education at UUCPA and UU communities, with an emphasis on information useful to RE teachers and parents.

In the first podcast, Reverend Dan Harper and I discuss the four major goals of the children’s religious education program, and explore one of these goals (preparing children to become Unitarian Universalist adults) in depth.

What do you think of the four goals? What can and should we do to better prepare children to become UU adults?

We’d love to hear your thoughts to these questions, and reactions to the podcast. Please post a comment to this blog entry.

Week 8 – How do you start your RE lessons?

This week, I was hoping you might share a little bit about how you start your RE sessions. How do gather the children? How do you introduce the topic? How do get kids interested in the lesson? Are there things you find particularly effective? What do you find challenging about getting started?

Please post your thoughts in as a comment to this blog entry. In general, please use first names only, initials or pseudonymns when mentioning people, especially children.

Note: some comments may be moderated and take up to 24 hours to appear.

If you prefer, you can write a note and send it to Rev. Dan using this Microsoft Word template.

Bloom’s taxonomy for CRE teachers

I came across an easy-to-understand version of Bloom’s taxonomy of levels of learning in the cognitive domain at a Learning Today blog posting that CRE teachers may find useful when lesson planning and reflecting on a Sunday school session.

There is a nice Bloom’s taxonomy poster for elementary teachers here.
