Youth in high school (gr. 9-12) have many options open to them at UUCPA. Youth will have different interests, and should find the activity or activities that best meets their individual needs.
Some high school youth choose to attend services in the Main Hall. Youth with specific interests and talents volunteer for (or may be recruited for) leadership responsibilities on Sunday mornings, including teaching younger children in Sunday school, or serving as a worship associate in the main service. In the 2015-2016 year, Shannon Casey will coordinate a monthly Sunday morning group that will explore UU connections with the United Nations; this group will plan a trip to U.N. headquarters in New York in the spring (see below for more info).
Sunday evening youth group
Our Senior High Youth Group (SHYG) chooses to meet from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday evenings twice a month (2nd, 4th, and 5th Sundays) — this evening time allows sleeping late on Sunday morning, and gives enough time for completing homework after the meeting.
Youth group meeting topics have included the following: marshmallow roasting outdoors at the UUCPA firepit; discussion based on a TED talk; meeting with the youth group of the Quaker meeting in Palo Alto; planning the June service trip; playing games; presentation on draft registration and conscientious objection by a senior in high school; cooking and eating dinner together.
June service trip
UUCPA youth go on a service trip in June, typically to the Los Angeles area. In 2015, the service trip was three days of work and camping at a nonprofit ecology school in the mountains of Orange County. To find out what we did on past service trips, click here or here.
Other service trips
Occasionally, there are other youth service trips, such as the July, 2015, service trip to Belize to work with Teachers for a Better Belize, working on schools in Belize. Trips like these are arranged when the opportunity arises, and will be publicized in the monthly CYRE email newsletter.
United Nations group
In 2015-2016, we are planning a monthly group that will meet to explore issues around the United Nations. This group expects to take a trip to United Nations headquarters in New York in May, 2016. To learn more, contact Shannon Casey, or watch the monthly CYRE email newsletter.
High school aged youth serve in a variety of leadership positions at UUCPA. Youth have been elected to the Board of Trustees (most recently in 2013 and 2015), served as worship associates, served on various committees, taught Sunday school, an more. Often, youth learn about leadership opportunities through the Senior High Youth Group (see above) and/or the Coming of Age program (see below), but any youth who has an interest in a specific leadership opportunity is encouraged to contact one of the ministers or a member of the Nominating Committee or Board of Trustees.
Coming of Age
UUCPA offers the popular Coming of Age program every other year, for young people in gr. 8-9. It will be offered next in 2015-2016. To learn more about the program, click here.
Comprehensive sexuality education
UUCPA offers comprehensive sexuality education for grade 7-9. To learn more, click here.
We are hoping to offer the grade 10-12 unit of OWL, if enough interest is demonstrated. Please contact the Minister of Religious Education if you have interest in this program.
