2. From your Associate Minister of Religious Education

August at UUCPA has been busy and exciting, as the Children and Youth Religious Education (CYRE) Committee and I get ready for the first Sunday of regular Sunday school on Aug. 30. This year, we’ve added programming for high school aged youth on Sunday mornings; we’re now offering the Coming of Age program every year; and there are lots of minor changes and improvements. The CYRE Committee is a talented and hardworking group of people who keep on improving and expanding our children and youth programs, so if you happen to run into one of them, thank them. They are: Alyssa Erickson, chair, Beth Nord, Edie Keating, Heather Chen, Kris Geering, and Shannon Casey, with Maribea Berry and Jenny Robertson serving as OWL coordinators.

I’ll be taking the last two months of my sabbatical time from September 15 through November 17. During this time, Sunday morning supervision will be provided by Hong Bui, Religious Education Assistant, and members of the CYRE Committee. If you have any questions about my sabbatical, you can ask members of the Sabbatical Committee: Castor Fu, Wynne Furth, and Amelia Shaw. While I’m on sabbatical, I plan to work on curriculum development, do additional research into the history of Unitarians in Palo Alto from 1895 to 1934, and take time for spiritual renewal.

One last thing — if your child comes to Sunday school or youth programs more than three times, please fill out a registration form. These forms help us plan programs. Plus, if you give us your child’s birthdate, the senior minister and I will send them a birthday card! You can get a registration form online here:

See you soon,
Dan Harper

5. Kid’s Carnival

In response to the Black Lives Matter movement, the University AME Zion Church is organizing community activities to bring people together. So come to “Kid’s Carnival: Community Coming Together” on Saturday, September 12, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Cubberley Community Center just down the street from UUCPA at 4000 Middlefield Rd., Palo Alto.

There will be food plus lots of fun activities for kids — and some of our UUCPA teens will be helping to lead those activities. UUCPA is a partner organization of “Kid’s Carnival.” For more information, please email Pastor Kaloma Smith .

6. United Nations group
Shannon Casey will be coordinating a group for teenagers and adults who would like to learn more about the United Nations. The group will meet once a month on Sunday mornings at 11 a.m.

For more information, contact Shannon Casey — or come to the first meeting on Sunday, August 30, at 11:00 a.m.

7.UUCPA custodian on sick leave, room set up changes

Howard Milligan, our UUCPA custodian, is out on sick leave for a couple of weeks. While he is out, please take responsibility for setting up your own room, and for returning the room to the standard set-up when you are done. Every room has a “room map,” showing where the furniture is supposed to go. So when your group is done, all you have to do is to set up the room the way it is shown on the room map.

And if you have any questions about Howard, please email Rev. Amy Morgenstern, as she is head of UUCPA staff.
