For this month’s schedule for the Navigators bias-free scouting program, contact Nathan Harris OR Ed Vail to be put on the email list.

2. From your Associate Minister of Religious Education

While I was scheduled for a month of sabbatical leave in November, unfortunately I was unable to take that sabbatical time. My father had a health crisis and I spent most of the month in Massachusetts. Fortunately, my father is doing well now. After meeting with the sabbatical committee on December 14, I will reschedule that month of sabbatical time. I’ll have more information next month.

Wishing you the best of holidays,
Rev. Dan Harper

3. Baby Journey — changed room

Baby Journey will be meeting this coming Sunday, December 7, at 10:45 a.m., in Room 6, instead of our usual Room 10. If you are the parent of a child aged 3 or under, stop by Room 6 to meet other new (or new-ish) parents, and to share your stories. Feel free to bring your little ones, or to leave them in child care.

4. OWL comprehensive sexuality education for gr. 7-9

This winter and spring, UUCPA will offer Our Whole Lives (OWL) Sexuality Education for grades 7-9. Parents who wish to enroll their youth in the program must attend a mandatory Parent Orientation Meeting on Sunday, Dec. 7, from 6:30-8pm in the Fireside Room with Rev. Dan Harper, OWL coordinator Jenny Robertson, and members of the OWL teaching team. If you cannot attend the meeting but would like to enroll your child in OWL, please contact Dan Harper by phone or e-mail.

5. OWL comprehensive sexuality education for gr. K-1 and gr. 4-6

This winter and spring, UUCPA will offer Our Whole Lives (OWL) Sexuality Education for grades K-1 and for gr. 4-6. Parents who are interested in having their child(ren) participate in OWL K-1 and 4-6 in Winter 2015 term should attend the Parent Meeting on Sunday, Dec. 14 from 11-12:30 pm in Room 4/5. Rev. Dan Harper and OWL Coordinator Maribea Berry will describe the program and answer questions. Advance registration and signed parental consent forms will be collected.

More information: https://uucpa-cyre.org/owl-program/#owlk146

6. Hanukah, O Hanukah Latke Fest

Join Rev. Amy Zucker Morgenstern for the 3rd night of Hanukah on Thursday, Dec. 18, at 6:30 in the Fireside Room. We will light the menorah, hear a Hanukah story and share a traditional meal of latkes and applesauce. For even more holiday fun, come to the kitchen at 4:30 and join in making latkes — bring potato peelers, an apron, graters/food processors.

Drop-ins are OK, but if possible please notify the office if you will attend (650-494-0541 or uucpa@uucpa.org) so Amy can buy enough food. Suggested donation for food: $3 per person.

7. Family Orchestra

Join in the Family Orchestra on Saturday, Dec. 20, from 7-9. Bring your instrument, and sit in while we read through some easy music. You’re also welcome to come and just listen. This is a kid-friendly and adult-friendly event. For more information, contact Carl Skold.

8. Bass Lake in June in 2015

Our friends at Skylake Yosemite Camp have informed us that the 2015 dates for UUCPA’s annual long weekend at Bass Lake are June 4th-7th. Instead of being the last group of the season at SYC, we’ll be the first. The 2nd weekend in September, when we usually go to Bass Lake, is not available due to an irregularity in the 2015 calendar that results in an extra week between Memorial Day (May 25th) and Labor Day (Sept 7th).

A few data points to consider when deciding if you’ll participate:

— Thursday, June 4th is the last day of the school year for Palo Alto schools, making a trip to Bass Lake a great way to kick-off summer break!
— There will probably be more water in the lake than there was last September. However, it may be chilly.
— Threat of fire should be lower, depending upon winter rain/snow.
— Longer days — 2 more hours of sunlight than in September, though daytime temperatures will be cooler than in September.

Registration will probably start in early April, more details to come. More info: contact Diane Meier-Phelps.
