2. From your Associate Minister of Religious Education

We keep adding programs and classes for kids and families at UUCPA, and improving existing programs. I know some of you are having a hard time keeping track of the changes and new programs, so here’s a quick summary:

a. Due to high demand, as of this year we now offer the popular OWL comprehensive sexuality education program for grades 7-9 every year.

b. As of this year, Coming of Age (CoA) and the Senior High Youth Group (SHYG) meet on alternate Sunday evenings at 6:30 p.m.

c. Due to high enrollment in certain age groups, we are dividing Sunday school classes differently this year:
Red class — preschool
Yellow class — gr. K-1
Green class — gr. 2 only
Blue class — gr. 3-4
Lavender class — gr. 5 only
Two different Purple classes — gr. 6-8

d. Due to high enrollment, there are now two different middle school classes on Sunday mornings. Purple 1 class visits other faith communities, and Purple 2 class does ecojustice projects. (Yes, you can move between the two programs, ask me about how to do that.)

e. There will be two youth service trips this summer. The Senior High Youth Group is planning their annual service trip to southern California. Plus, there will be another youth service trip to Belize (see article below).

f. We will be affiliated with or hosting two week-long day camps in June, 2015: Peace Camp, and Ecojustice Camp.

Whew — that’s a lot of changes! No wonder some of us feel a bit confused. But it’s also pretty exciting. This is a great time to have your child enrolled at UUCPA.

See you soon,
Rev. Dan Harper

3. Bass Lake weekend has openings

There is still time to sign up for the relaxing UUCPA family weekend at Bass Lake. This is a great way to meet other UUCPA families, and have a nice relaxing weekend at the end of summer. If you are not familiar with the Bass Lake weekend, you can learn more about it at this Web page:
http://www.uucpa.org/bass_lake/about_bass_lake.html

If you think you want to go, act now! There are only two cabins available, and it’s first-come, first-served. The absolute deadline is September 1. To reserve a cabin for your family, send email NOW to: basslake-info@uucpa.org

4. Coming of Age program begins

The Coming of Age program for gr. 8-10 had an introductory meeting on Sunday, August 24. But don’t worry if you missed the meeting — there’s still time to sign up for Coming of Age. First, read the details about Coming of Age by clicking here.

If this looks like the right program for your child, please notify Rev. Dan Harper, and he will make sure you are on the Coming of Age email list. Then plan to be at the first meeting on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 6:30 p.m.

5. Advance notice of summer camps

UUCPA is affiliated with two week-long day camps, and both camps have recently announced their dates for 2015. Peace Camp will take place from June 15-19, 2015, and Ecojustice Camp will take place from June 22-26, 2015.

Registration for both camps will open in January. To learn more about these camps, with links to the camp Web sites, click here.

6. Youth service trip to Belize in Summer, 2015

Anne Frahn is organizing a youth service trip to Belize, to take place in summer, 2015. This trip is open to all youth whose families are affiliated with UUCPA. For more information, click here.

If your child is interested in this trip, and will be enetering gr. 9-12 in the fall of 2015, please contact Anne Frahn.

7. Coming of Age schedule

The Coming of Age program will have its first meeting on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 6:30 p.m. in Room 10. At this meeting, we will begin planning the meal that we will serve to the Hotel de Zink homeless shelter on Sat., Sept. 27.

Then on Sat., Sept. 27, we will meet at UUCPA at 6 p.m. to cook dinner for Hotel de Zink, the rotating homeless shelter which stays at UUCPA during September each year. We will be done serving dinner at 10 p.m.

Contrary to the calendar sent out in late August, there will NOT be a Coming of Age meeting on Sunday, September 28 — because we will have just met the day before.

8. Upcoming sabbatical for Rev. Dan Harper

The UUCPA Board of Trustees has approved a sabbatical for Rev. Dan Harper during the 2014/2015 congregational year. Dan will be working on writing and curriculum development, and he will be taking four non-consecutive months as sabbatical time — November, February, April, and June — and possibly 3 non-consecutive weeks in August, September, and October of 2015.

The CYRE Committee and Board have already made plans to cover for Dan while he is on sabbatical. A sabbatical committee is forming, and this committee will be your primary source of information about Dan’s sabbatical. Castor Fu and Wynne Furth have already agreed to serve on the committee, and we are currently waiting to hear from a potential youth member.
